English first, because that is where our focus is — with Maths and the Sciences alongside it. What follows is what students actually tell us on the call, in their words — and what we do about it.
It is the sentence we hear most. Around it sit the same others, call after call: not being able to tell the language question from the structure question, analysis that explains what a quote means but never what it does, quotes and poems that will not stay memorised, and the paper running out before the last question does. And underneath all of it — most students have never been shown how to revise for English at all. So that is what we teach: how each question is built, what it is really asking, and how the marks it carries are picked up.
The last questions carry the most marks and they are the ones left blank — alongside marks lost to mistakes that get called silly, and a topic from two years ago that never quite went in. You cannot build a house without bricks. That is what we ask of most students in Maths: build up to a top grade when half the bricks were never handed to them, and no amount of past papers puts a missing one in place. So we give them the bricks — every one they need — and then teach how a multi-step question is answered, so the marks at the back of the paper get collected.
Nearly every student names them. Then the required practicals, and the question that takes a topic they know and puts it somewhere they have never seen it. There is an enormous amount to hold in your head across Physics, Chemistry and Biology — and a child can hold all of it and still come out with a 5, because the marks are not given for knowing it. They are given for how the answer is written: what to include, what to leave out, and the technical words that have to be in it. That is exam mastery, and it is what we teach.
